Foreign Reporters Advocate For Somaliland Recognition

Charles Haviland of the BBC reports from
Somaliland in the Horn of Africa. Ten years ago, the people here were preparing to declare their independence from Somalia and establish a break-away country. But, to this day, Somaliland is not officially recognised by the rest of the world. So how are the people of Somaliland coping with their isolation?

" Somaliland Deserves Recognition " Said by a Canadian, Matt Pridon who lives in Somaliland, he also said " This place demonstrates all the attributes of State and infact it is not accepted, it is not acknowledged and it is a bizarre. It is better than most of the southern regions and its territory. It functions very well, relatively well, it has no external dents, it survives whether the international community wants or not which is rare in this continent."

Charles Haviland concluded his report " Today they got nothing to do with Mogadishu, its leaders and it appears most of its people would like International community to recognize it as they did the Yugoslav Republic which broke away around the same time. In the mean time somaliland can only hope as small people will visit and take stock of what they achieved, they will spread the message in favor of International recognition ."

Somaliland marching on the right path.
The rebirth of Somaliland wouldn't have been possible without the arduous military struggle of SNM against the regime of dictator Mohamed Siyad Barre. Thumbs up for the historic achievements of SNM and its leaders who engineered the basic democratic basic principles of which SNM has become famous for. The liberation movement of SNM never lost sight its objectives and survived as one unit. Part of what underlies the longevity of SNM was the deeply rooted cultural conditions that have been hospitable to the tender shoots of democracy..SNM's military sucess against Barre's regime and the methods by which that success was brought about can effectively serve as a guideline for which all indigenous societies aspiring for an autonomy can follow.
